Welcome to IndyRockets

This site was created as a resource for anyone interested in hobby rocketry in central Indiana.

This is also the source for information on the Rocketeers Of Central Indiana (ROCI), Section #625 of The National Association of Rocketry (NAR). Feel free to check here for information about ROCIs launch events. The launch events are conducted throughout the warmer months at the Academy of Model Aeronautics' Headquarters and Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana. This facility is the finest flying field in the state and ROCI is proud to be the exclusive host of the rocketry events held there. ROCI is not currently conducting meetings as we have lost our meeting place.

Unfortunately I read the shock cord mount very wrong. I secured it with only masking tape. :( Parachute opened flew the nose cone to the next county, and dropped the 2 pound rockets straight down fast. Needless to say on 3 Aerotech F's its now a pancake in a dump. :)

Thank you everyone for including me in tonight's meeting. A special thank you to Aaron for bringing a rocket with dual deployment. One more question Aaron. Tonight when you said you have to be 16 to buy pyrogen (or something close) Is it buy or use? And if it is use could I build a rocket that would use that and have it be filled by someone who is 16 and legally acquired it?

You're welcome and I'm glad to help. The substance I'm talking about is pyrodex. It is a substitute for FFFFg black powder which is a restricted substance. In order to buy 4F black powder you have to be at least 18 and hold a federal low explosives user permit (LEUP) from the ATF. Rather than go and get a LEUP for the black powder, you can use pyrodex instead. Most places require that you be 16 to purchase it but I don't know if that is policy or law. Once obtained, it can be used by anyone but I would HIGHLY recommend that you not get some and use it unless you're doing so with someone that is knowledgeable about it. It isn't regulated by the ATF but it is a dangerous substance. Since you can't launch high power rockets without the club (have to file FAA waiver and get motors, etc) I would recommend that you have someone from the club setup any ejection charges for you. When I'm there and not performing range duty, I'll be more than happy to help you.

Today I bought the Lil' Nuke and the Estes Interceptor-E. After reading the directions on the Interceptor I realized it was much more difficult than the other Estes kits. I hope to have them both completed by the Nov. 8th launch + maybe some more :). Any tips on either kit are greatly appreciated.

Thanks, John Wedding

Can pyrodex be used in the standard cylinder charge holders in PML kits?

I have not tried it but it should be possible. The key to using pyrodex is that you have to contain it better than FFFFg black powder so that it burns completely. I don't think the red rubber caps that the PML charge holder uses would work.
