Robert's 75mm Renegade for L1 1 year 2 months ago #2868

I'm just going to post a link to TRF - has all the pics attached and the fun I had building it. I am thankful it turned out OK, HPR projects are a handful, especially to paint nicely...

Not pretty now - doing motorcycle maintenance and a small engine project. Small engines = no fun.
Any word on upcoming launches? I know TRA had one but I am not yet quite ready. Making bridle out of 1/2" Apogee orange tubular nylon with loops made via fishing line and epoxy (old school, doesn't cost anything). 3' magenta :p LOC chute at the ready with swivel attached. I also need to fasten together upper and lower sections. Will be using 4-40 T-Nuts mounted in small blocks of wood, epoxy to attach, and roundhead cap screws with small 4-40 washers contoured to tube curve. Haha - my hand and arm will not fit in LOC 75mm tube so I need access to the anchor eye for the bridle. Good reason for a 4" kit.
Here's a question for all : with a 6" long 75mm coupler full of #3 steel wool, do I need a chute and/or cord protector, or is a little dog barf for insurance good enough?
Learned a lot of stuff : )

Robert, again congrats on the L1.
A number of my AT kits came with stainless scrubby material for a baffle. Not nearly as big as you're proposing. They seem to work OK as I haven't had recovery problems with them. After a flight, I poke at the baffle to try to clean out the big pieces along with the ejection charge cap.
I suggest you ground test. Don't just rely on a calculator. I've seen too many recovery failures at launches where the rocketeer just relied on the calculator....including some college teams. I ground test and video the results. Several times I had to up the 4F BP quite a bit in order to get a successful deployment. I record the results in an Excel spreadsheet so the next time I'll know the charge sizes and no. and type of shear pins. I weigh my BP with a digital jewelry balance.
